Why is Video So Friggin’ Hard To Build?

Video is friggin' hard to build. Here are 6 reasons why:
  1. Videos need to be transcoded to work on different devices and browsers
  2. Whenever a new device or browser is released, your system needs to be tested and possibly upgraded or altered to work in the new browser or device.
  3. If you want to take advantage of webRTC/HTML, your system needs to be built to accommodate it.
  4. For computers that only accept Flash, you want to make sure Flash is a default for your system.
  5. If you want to customize the video experience, eg put a limit on recording time or ensure the aspect ratio is preserved, that needs to be built.
  6. Measures for slow systems or a loss of Internet need to be accounted for so that videos are preserved rather than lost while uploading.
